When people say they want to hit the gym for a few strength training workouts, are they really doing what they say they are going to do? That is to say, does their workout program really
seek to enhance strength or are they taking part in a bodybuilding workout? If it is the latter, then they will not see the noticeable amount of increased strength that they may desire. Athletes that want to enhance their performance will need to take part in a strength training routine. At the core of all strength training gym workouts is a very high amount of weight at low reps. Basically, you will be lifting 75% – 80% of your maximum lift for maybe 5 – 6 reps. It would be tough to lift more than that when you have loaded the weights to their maximum amount. Had the weight been dropped to 65% of maximum and lifted for 10 reps, then the muscles would respond by growing larger and stronger but they would not develop the enhanced strength that the low rep/high weight strength training paradigm is based on. Again, the goal here is to significantly enhance one’s strength. It is not about developing the look of a bodybuilder.
This is most definitely not to say that strength training will not have an effect on your physique. It most definitely will! You will end up with a solid physique that displays the effects of an enhanced workout that is loaded with thickly defined muscles. However, the muscle appearance will be one that is functionally strong as opposed to bodybuilder contest-like in appearance. Considering you are not looking for cosmetic results, this is not a bad thing.
